someone said book sansa is morally grey. book. sansa. the same sansa who wept when joffrey died. the same sansa who wanted to exile those who hurt her rather than kill them. the same sansa who reacted to ser hugh’s death with sadness even though he’s a strange. the same sansa who is taking care of her cousin to the best of her ability. the same sansa who thinks stealing a bit of food from the kitchens is bad behaviour. the same sansa who shows compassion to sandor clegane and risks violence to help people. the same sansa who wanted to give bread to rioters who assaulted her. that sansa? have y’all ever read a single sansa chapter
im not INTERESTED anymore in seeing men’s perception of what female leisure time looks like, how we lounge around hairless and small and beautiful on our beds and couches in oversized shirts and lace underwear, unaware and unassuming and all the more beautiful for not Trying to be beautiful, i’m TIRED of it. even our most basic freedom of privacy, time alone with the self, has been butchered and ripped from us by the gaze of male photographers and artists
I will never understand these people who claim that Sansa Stark is “irredeemable” and “sold out her family” because in Book 1, she went and told Cersei about Ned’s plans to leave while totally unaware of all the drama that was actually happening between the adults?
Why is it that an 11 year old girl’s choice is the most irredeemable yet ASOIAF/GOT fandom has had no problem excusing and whitewashing the actions of every other murderer there is? I’m confused of people who claim that Sansa is lucky that the TV show didn’t have Sansa tell Cersei about Ned’s plans because she would have been totally irredeemable and the worst there is and never be allowed to be forgiven. Why? You can forgive plenty of characters for murder but a little girl telling off things that she didn’t even realize were dangerous because she thought it was harmless? That’s the worst? Were you n never 11 years old or something?
And how did 11 year old Sansa sell out her family when she wasn’t even aware there was anything to sell out? The worst thing Sansa is guilty of is being a rebellious kid who was told she can’t stay over at her friends’ for a sleep over and then tells her friends’ parents about it and want them to convince her parents to let her stay. That is literally the real life equivalent of Sansa’s actions.
Sansa had no idea there was any danger, she thought telling Cersei was a harmless thing and she’d get to stay and live out her dream. No one ever bothered to tell her there was danger, no one explained to her what was going on so she’d have any knowledge. Sansa is not psychic, she’s not clairvoyant, she had no clue that going to Cersei was the wrong move because she wasn’t even aware there was any danger. It’s not as if Ned sat Sansa down and told her about the truth about Joffrey and all the dangers with Cersei and how if they don’t leave then they could all be dead, and then Sansa ran off to tell knowing all of this danger to her and her family.
This notion that seems to have popped up that Sansa actively sold out her family’s safety for her selfish dream literally has no base? SHE LITERALLY DIDN’T KNOW ANYTHING WAS GOING ON.
I find it entirely hypocritical that people bash 11 year old Sansa for being naive and making a mistake because she was unaware, yet nobody has ever bashed Ned Stark for being totally aware of the situation and still telling Cersei everything knowingthat he was putting his family in danger. A grown man can make a mistake while totally being aware of the dangers and be redeemed in the eyes of readers/viewers because “HE’S JUST SO HONORABLE” but an 11 year old girl making a mistake unknowingly and she is “SELFISH, TOTALLY NOT REDEEMABLE, NEVER BE FORGIVEN”???
I mean, really? In all of the books and show, it’s a little girl who is the most irredeemable? REALLY?
me3 gets a lot of shit but lets remember how many just fucking great and intense scenes there were
Leaving Earth as it’s torn apart
Moving passed your differences with Ash/Kaidan, only to see them nearly killed while you let your guard down for just a minute
Seeing the destruction of Palaven from Menae
Watching Mordin sacrifice himself, all while singing Scientist Salarian
Having to hold a gun up to the Virmire Survivor, knowing full well that if they don’t trust you, you will kill them.
Thane’s dying prayer.
Shepard, tortured and plagued every night by the same nightmare, only getting worse every time someone else passes.
The slowly growing list on the Normandy’s memorial wall.
Tali, taking off her mask, finally home.
Watching Kai Leng escape your grasp on Thessia, as more Reapers descend, the asari commando on your line screaming as they’re attacked until the feed cuts completely.
The return to Horizon, to see that the people there, once attacked by the Collectors, have now been experimented on, tortured.
Watching Miranda stand up and kill her father, finally ending a lifetime’s worth of torment.
Returning to Earth to see it, decimated, grey, coated in ash and the blood of the innocent.
Shepard, giving the crew one last speech, as they all gather in to listen, ready to follow them into hell and back.
Shepard, saying good bye to their friends and loved ones. They know this is it for them; if anyone is going to die for the mission, it’s them.
Shepard, painfully tearing away from their squad during the run for the beam. It’s their mission now–they can live on without them.
“When I was young, women were raped on the campus of a great university and the authorities responded by telling all the women students not to go out alone after dark or not to be out at all. Get in the house. (For women, confinement is always waiting to envelope you.) Some pranksters put up a poster announcing another remedy, that all men be excluded from campus after dark. It was an equally logical solution, but men were shocked at being asked to disappear, to lose their freedom to move and participate, all because of the violence of one man.”
— Rebecca Solnit, Grandmother Spider in Men Explain Things To Me and Other Essays
not to be controversial but like……. there is literally no reason for any movie or show to have a rape scene in it. there is literally no reason to show that to anyone. and before you hit me with the “but it helps bring light to the subject!!!!! its better than being silent on the matter!!!!” find a better way. dont use a violent act such as that for shock value. there are way better ways to portray or shed light on that issue in media without forcing people to watch something so triggering.
The Lovely Bones movie adapation is a grade-A example of this(leaving out rape in movies) working. Peter Jackson says it really well.
“The key event in Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones is the rape and murder of 14-year-old Susie Salmon, but in adapting the book to film, director Peter Jackson had several reasons for toning down the violent incident that sets the story in motion.
In the movie, we do not see any rape, and the murder is mostly implied. “There are artistic and there are moral reasons and there are practical reasons,” Jackson said in a press conference over the weekend in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Among other things, depicting the violence would immediately get the film an R rating. “We wanted to make a film that teenagers could watch,” Jackson said. “[Co-writer and producer] Fran [Walsh] and I have a daughter who’s very similar to Susie’s age. We wanted Katie to be able to see this film. There are a lot of positive aspects of this film, and it’s not something that I think I wanted to shield our daughter from. So it was important for us to not go into an R-rated territory at all.”
Then there are the moral reasons for omitting the graphic crime. “It would frankly make it a film that I wouldn’t want to watch,” Jackson said. “I mean, I would have no interest in seeing that depicted on film, and I would not want to see the film. Every movie that I make is a film that I want to see. It’s very important. I make movies that I know I would enjoy seeing in the cinema, and that would not be one of them.–
But to do anything that depicted violence towards especially a young person in a way that was serious, to me, I would have no interest in filming it at all. It would be repulsive.”
Stanley Tucci, who plays the murderer, said it was a hard enough role to actually play and they didnt even shoot that horrible scene in the book.
In a separate interview, Peter Jackson talks about how disgusted even story-boarding the rape scene went and failed to make it in the film. Some of the crew walked out of the room. The cast and crew also didnt want to subject the two main actors, Saoirse Ronan (who plays 14 year-old Susie) and Stanley Tucci (who plays Mr. Harvey, a serial killer of little girls), to the scene. They didn’t want Saoirse to experience that scene and it obviously affected Stanley as well.
Reading a rape scene is really so much more different compared to people having to write it out, act it out, and really SEE it. I think the people involved in this movie did what I wish everyone did when handling this subject in just a graphic medium. And I would 100% recommend this book and movie. Both are equally powerful and it’s hard to describe.
Also : Fire Walk With Me is a walk through the life of a traumatized and abused Laura Palmer in the days before her murder and it manages to not have a single rape scene or shot of her sexual abuse in it. Instead we get to know the victim as a human being. I don’t think it’s confirmed but i strongly suspect this is thanks to the influence of David Lynch’s daughter, who wrote The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer and is usually credited with bringing a LOT of humanity to someone who in any other work would just be considered the “dead girl” that inspires the male characters with her suffering.
my fave greek history story to tell is that of agnodice. like she noticed that women were dying a lot during childbirth so she went to egypt to study medicine in alexandria and was really fucking good but b/c it was illegal for women to be doctors in athens she had to pretend to be a man. and then the other doctors noticed that she was 10x better than them and accused her of seducing and sleeping with the women patients. like they brought her to court for this. and she just looked at them and these charges and stripped in front of everyone like “yeah. im not fucking your wives” and then they got so mad that a woman was better at their jobs then them that they tried to execute her but all her patients came to court and were like “are you fucking serious? she is the reason you have living children and a wife.” so they were shamed into changing the law and that is how women were given the right to practice medicine in athens
when you break a world record, but a man comes in second (x)
And it’s worth note that Ledecky didn’t just win the 800 freestyle- she obliterated it:
Thats her. And those specks in the distance are her competitors. The second place swimmer was 11 SECONDS behind her. 11 seconds is FOREVER in something like this. Most second place swimmers in most races finish fractions of a second behind the first place swimmer.
Her finishing with none of her competitors in sight. And that yellow line is the previous world record’s pace. Ledecky is more than a full body length ahead.
Which, btw, she did in the 400m freestyle earlier in the games. Seen here:
(The previous world record in this race was held by her, to begin with, btw. As well as the 3 world record times preceding that one.)
So to sum it up: Yeah, Phelps is one of the most decorated Olympic swimmers ever etc etc but him getting silver means jack in the face of the actual-human-avatar-of-Poseidon that is Katie Ledecky.
11 (ELEVEN) SECONDS FUCK THE WHAT THIS IS NOT GETTING ENOUGH COVERAGE. i should have had that information before now
IM SO FUCKING PROUD OF KATIE IDC HOW MANY YEARS AGO THIS WAS
